TRAINING MODULES
I. The Process of Observation
Observation can be used to provide additional information about a student’s learning style and behavior. Stepping back and carefully looking at the environment and the complex interactions can furnish clues to plan for a student’s learning
Ø Documenting observable behavior
Ø Interpretation
Ø Inferences and drawing conclusions.
II. Referral Procedures
Procedures for referral ensure that student’s needs are met through a systematic, documented process

Ø Awareness of general cultural norms
Ø Awareness of cultural expectations of individual families
By using redirection, you are modeling behavior for the child. You replace an unwanted behavior with one that is acceptable. It is tempting for us to say “No!” when we are alarmed or want to stop a certain behavior. Redirection is a good alternative to “no” and repeating the same message repeatedly. It lets you show the child what you want him/her to do.
Ø How to avoid power struggles
V. Recognizing each student’s Individual Pattern of Development and LearningEach student is a unique individual. Each student learns in his or her own unique way. Utilize each student’s pattern to enhance his or her learning.
Ø Identifying student’s strengths
Ø Developing individualized lesson plans
VI. Utilizing Strengths to Focus on Needs
Identifying existing strengths of each individual student allows for the development of new competencies and strengthening the areas of need of the student.
Ø Conducting strength based observations
VII. Early Intervention
What are the benefits of early intervention, to the child, family, and society?
Ø Review the benefits of early intervention
What is an IFSP & IEP? What does this mean to you as a parent, professional or Para-professional?
Ø Relationship to your classroom curriculum and services
Ø Implementing the IFSP or IEP
Participation in an inclusive classroom influences teachers and helps students without disabilities develop understanding and sensitivity to their peers.
Being a parent or caregiver is not always easy. Raising a child with special needs places many demands on parents and the family. It is extremely important to provide support and understanding.
When students are in a learning environment, they are learning about themselves and the world around them. The classroom and school environment should be one that encourages social growth, language growth, problem solving, and imagination.
